Best done in the morning to combine all three archaeological sites on a single combined ticket (sold at the Forum/Palatine entrance to skip the longer Colosseum line). Start at Castel Sant'Angelo for views over the Tiber, then enter the Vatican Museums with a timed-entry ticket (almost always required — check the official Musei Vaticani site for availability and current opening days, since closures and Wednesday Papal Audiences affect schedules). Finish at St. Peter's, which is free but security lines can be long; the dome climb is a separate ticket.

A laid-back afternoon and evening food walk for travellers who want to eat the way Romans actually eat: a street-food lunch at Campo de' Fiori, supplì and pizza al taglio across the river in Trastevere, then a sit-down dinner of carbonara, cacio e pepe or amatriciana, and gelato to finish. Best on a Thursday-to-Saturday evening when the neighbourhood is at its liveliest, but go earlier (around 7 pm) if you want a table without a long wait.
