Recommended order

  1. 1

    Pantheon

    Open →

    30 min

A perfect Roman temple turned church, with the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world.

Why this stop: Best-preserved building of ancient Rome and the natural starting point. The portico and square are always free to stand in; entry to the interior is ticketed for tourists on most days.

  2. 2

    Trevi Fountain

    Open →

    20 min

Rome's most theatrical Baroque fountain. Toss a coin and you'll return.

Why this stop: Ten minutes on foot from the Pantheon and completely free to see. Go early: by 10 am the front rail is three rows deep.

Known pickpocket area in the crush — keep bags in front.

  3. 3

    Piazza Navona

    Open →

    30 min

Baroque masterpiece on the footprint of Domitian's ancient stadium.

Why this stop: Three Baroque fountains in one open-air room, and a good place for the first sitting break — use the stone benches rather than a terrace table.

  4. 4

    Spanish Steps

    Open →

    20 min

135 travertine steps rising to Trinità dei Monti — Rome's most romantic stairway.

Why this stop: A quick look and a photo. Remember you cannot sit on the steps — it is fined — so this is a stand-and-move stop.

  5. 5

    St. Peter's Basilica

    Open →

    1 h

The largest Catholic church in the world, with Michelangelo's Pietà and Bernini's baldachin.

Why this stop: The biggest free experience in Rome: entry to the basilica costs nothing, only the dome climb is paid. Budget most of that hour for the security queue and respect the dress code — covered shoulders and knees, or you are turned away at the checkpoint.

No large bags allowed through security, and there is no cloakroom for them outside the museums.

  6. 6

    Aventine Keyhole + Orange Garden

    Open →

    45 min

A magic keyhole frames the dome of St. Peter's perfectly down a cypress avenue.

Why this stop: The reward at the end: keyhole view, Orange Garden terrace over the river and Santa Sabina, all free and all quiet after a loud day. Time it for the hour before sunset.

The only real climb of the day, with few cafés at the top — fill your bottle before going up.

Frequently asked questions

Is this day really free?▾

Every stop is free to enter, including St. Peter's Basilica and the Aventine viewpoints. What still costs money: food and coffee, the Pantheon's paid interior entry on most days, the dome climb, any museum, and public toilets. Water is free at the nasoni fountains.

How much walking is involved?▾

Roughly 8 km across six stops, flat until the climb up the Aventine at the end. If your legs give out, drop the Spanish Steps and take metro line B or a bus toward Circo Massimo instead of walking the last stretch.
