Safety & pickpockets
Pickpockets work bus 64 (Termini–Vatican), metro line A and Termini station. Keep bag in front, phone in inner pocket. Rome is otherwise very safe.
Water & nasoni

Public restrooms
Cafés generally let you use the toilet if you order an espresso (€1). Big museums and McDonald's also work.
Best season
Best: April–May and late September–October. Avoid August (hot, many shops closed). Christmas and Easter are magical but crowded.
Where to stay
Best areas: Monti (cool, central), Trastevere (lively), Prati (Vatican), Centro Storico (priciest, walk to all).
Visiting monuments
Book Colosseum, Vatican Museums and Borghese Gallery online a week ahead. Last Sunday of the month: state museums free (very crowded).
Emergencies
112 — single European emergency number (police, ambulance, fire).
Pharmacies & hospitals
