Roman Forum

The political, religious and commercial heart of ancient Rome.

Best for: Anyone who liked the Colosseum and wants more context

Why visit

This is where Rome actually happened — senate debates, triumphal marches, temples, elections. Walking the Via Sacra is walking the original main street of the Western world.

History

For over a thousand years the Forum was where senators debated, generals triumphed and citizens worshipped. Today its ruins still tell that story.

What to see

Arch of Septimius Severus, Temple of Saturn, Curia (Senate House), Vestal House and Via Sacra.

Anu's local tip

Enter the Forum from the Palatine side — the crowd flows the other way, so you get quiet views for the first 30 minutes.

Photo spot

From the Tabularium terrace at Capitoline Museums, looking down over the whole Forum.

Common mistake to avoid

Trying to identify every ruin. Pick 5 highlights (Curia, Arch of Titus, Temple of Saturn, House of the Vestals, Via Sacra) and enjoy the rest as atmosphere.

Nearby

Palatine Hill (same ticket), Capitoline Museums, Piazza Venezia, Monti for coffee.

Practical tips

Comfortable shoes essential — uneven ground. Combine with Palatine Hill (same ticket).

Frequently asked questions

Should I do the Forum before or after the Colosseum?▾

Most people prefer the Colosseum first thing in the morning, then walk down into the Forum and up the Palatine when the sun is higher. The Forum has almost no shade — bring water and a hat.
